Winter Rye
For Feed or Cover Crop Seed
Bags of rye are 56 Lbs (1 bushel), and cost $13.00 per bag.
We are sold out of rye and will not have any available in 2024
Our next possible crop will be summer of 2025
Each year on the farm we like to grow at least one field of small grains. Changing up the rotation is great for the soil, and it allows us to experiment with alternative crops. In 2023 we grew a field of winter rye, mainly so we could harvest our own cover crop seed (we plant almost all of the farm fields into rye after the corn and soybeans have been harvested, so growing our own seed makes a lot of sense).
It just so happens we ended up with a surplus. This rye has been run through our Clipper M2B fanning mill, and is quite clean and free of weed seeds and other debris. Along with using it for cover crop seed, our customers have also purchased rye to use as an ingredient in their chicken feed mixtures. I’m even going to experiment with grinding it into flour for our household. It’s a versatile crop!
This particular crop of rye had no herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, or artificial fertilizer applied. It’s about as close to organic as we can get without being officially certified.
