Prepping for Syrup

I know we haven’t had a lot of farm social media stuff going on, but that’s about to change. The winter has been busy with lots of office work and wildlife corn sales, but now spring is closing in. With the snow turning sugary and the days warming up, maple syrup season is just around the corner.

Naturally, I’m not as prepared as I should be. We’re almost doubling the number of taps this year, and I need a large supply of wood to fire the evaporator.

Luckily we have quite a few dead elm trees – victims of dutch elm disease – that blew down during the winter. Now I have the task of cutting and splitting my wood supply while simultaneously cleaning up the tangled ghosts of these formerly vibrant sentinels.
